Tips For Holding Happy Hour At Home

Published on May 27, 2023.

What could be better than hosting a happy hour at home – other than being invited to one, of course. Happy hours at bars are fun, yes, but the camaraderie and enjoyment experienced at an in-home happy hour is beyond compare. Invite friends or family and get ready to let your hair down. Make it family-friendly, if you so choose, or let the adults have a little “grown-ups only” celebration and relaxation without the kids pulling on their pant legs.
It's a great way to get to know new acquaintances, as well as celebrate the love and joy shared by old friends. For your next In-Home Happy Hour, here are a few tips.

What Time?

Make sure your guests know that it's okay to have dinner plans elsewhere because this is going to be a before-dinner happy hour. The perfect timeframe is usually between 5 PM and 7 PM. If you don't want any of that after-party, awkward lingering, make it known in no uncertain terms that the end of the night is absolutely, positively 7:15. Everybody out!

Create an Atmosphere

This is a stress-free event that should be fun for one at all. Keep it simple with a few wines to choose from and some light bites. Whether indoors or outdoors, keep your decorations minimal. Make it formal for a fancy touch, give it a tropical theme for an outdoor happy hour (with some Jimmy Buffett music playing), or just keep it casual within the four walls of your humble abode.

Serving Drinks

Once again, try to keep it simple. If you are acquainted with a number of wine drinkers, several wines are all you're going to need. As a suggestion, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay are great because they’re food friendly and refreshing. To go with your light bites, pick a lighter red wine such as Pinot Noir. Mix it up – a little white, a little red, and something for those who don't drink.
Of course, you can always put mixed drinks on the menu, champagne, blender drinks – you name it. The sky’s the limit.

If You’re The Happy Hour Invitee, Bring an Appropriate Gift

Happy hours are, let's face it, for getting happy. If you want to make your host one of the happiest people on the planet, show up with a champagne or wine gift basket in your arms. Sure, they're probably going to have enough wine, beer, and mixed drinks to go around. They may even be set for snacks. But if they don't use it tonight, this gift basket will be a delightfully anticipated treat for them sometime down the line.
Additionally, you will be on the guest list for sure when they plan their next soirée!
